In April 2013, the Rana Plaza garment factory, which was manufacturing for huge global clothing brands, collapsed, killing 1138 people and injuring 2500 more.
Approximately 75 million people all over the world work to make our clothes- 80% of them are women. Most live in poverty. Many are exploited and verbally and physically abused. They work in unsafe and dirty conditions.
The fashion industry is the world’s second largest polluter. It’s responsible for 10% of the world’s carbon emissions. Americans throw away 14 million tons of clothing each year— and 85% of that ends up in a landfill or incinerator.
In 2016, I went from a mall trip every week to quitting fast fashion cold turkey.
I still love fashion. But I learned there is a better way.
